Understanding the Year 2012 - The mayan prophecy

¿Are you ready for 2012?

Some say it is a lie, others that it’s a story fixed by the media and some people are sure that on December 21, 2012 the world will come to an end. Is it really 2012 mayan prediction true? See the facts and the structure of the 2012 prophecy and get your own conclusions

¿Why do people say that in December 21, 2012 the mayan long count calendar will end and this will mark the end of the world?

We first have to understand the timeframe and how the mayan calendar is composed to reach the year 2012.  According to history, a world is supposed to be composed by 20 b'ak'tuns, each b'ak'tun is equal to 20 k'ak'tun cycles. A b'ak'tun has 144,000 days, equivalent to 394.52 years.

Baktun = 144,000 days = 394.52 normal years

To understand where the prophecy comes from we have to go back to the Popol Vuh', which is a book compiling details of the creation according to the K’iche’ Mayan belief of 2012 and their own story. This book says that the mayan gods created four worlds. The gods failed on the creation of the first three worlds, until they succeed in the fourth one where man was placed.

This previous third world ended after 13 b'ak'tunks, lasting 5,128.76 years and from that date the fourth world started (this corresponds either to 11 or 13 august, 3114 BC in the Gregorian calendar). This means that the fourth world also come to an end on the reach of the thirteen b'akt'un, either December 21 or December 23, 2012.

The grand cycle of the famous mayan calendar ends forever in 2012 and according to the mayan prophecy after this time the peace and quiet will reign and the earth and the people will experience a physical or spiritual transformation.

A new age of transition may come, a so called “shift” by some historians, books and movies. 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era.

If the mayans still existed, the end of the thirteen baktun would be the most significant moment in the history of the world. In some texts found in Guatemala there is a suggestion that Armageddon would overtake the present universe when the long count mayan calendar reaches completion on 2012.

¿Why is there so much fear about December 2012?

Scenarios for the end of the world have always been thought from time to time but now the world faces a calendar created by the most astronomically and cosmologically advanced civilization. A calendar used by the mayans to know the position of planets and stars and to be prepared for future significant world events.

According to the hypothesis, the mayans based their calendar observations in the dust clouds of the Milky Way which they called Xibalba, or the underworld, claiming that the sun precisely aligns with this intersection point in the winter solstice in the year 2012.

There are also several theories about the world’s grates events of our time. Some say we are to experience the Arrival of the next solar maximum which is the period of the gratest solar activity in the solar cycle of the earth.

The rumor of a collision of the earth with a passing planet has been contradicted and rejected by astronomical observations by the NASA.

And at last the great Galactic alignment of the December solstice sun. Time when the earth and the sun are supposed to pass through a great “beam” from the center of the galaxy. This alignment occurs every 26,000 years and now in 2012 we’ll be part of this great event.

Even though the end of the mayan long count calendar will happen on December 2012, we cannot be sure if anything will happen at all. Some scholars and scientists have dismissed the idea of a catastrophe in 2012, others say that the end of the calendar on the 13th baktun would probably mean celebration. All we can be sure about is that according to the sacred mayan calendar we will live a unique transition between epochs.
